been using this product for years..usually the 40lb rated for in shore land popping etc..have used the 90lb for bottom bashing but sharks dont always cut through it which leaves you having to get them close to the boat to extract hooks or just cutting off tackle...will use the 65lb as a compromise..I dont mind dropping sharks, it is the macks and whatever good reef fish I dont wish to lose

I have been using this product for many years on the upper Mississippi River. This works excellent for keeping Northern pike from biting off your lures. I put this on all my fishing poles. I have found that 20 lb test is the just right for flexibility and toughness. Beware; this line can break if the wire starts to abraid. Keep a close eye on the area closest to the knot or if the line looks like the wire is starting to fray.I have not found any other product that works as well is this. I have saved many lures and more importantly caught more fish by using this product. One thing I discovered is this works extremely well with top water (like a Zara spook). Regular braid catches on the treble hooks. The 7x7 leader material does not catch on the top water hooks. I go through 5-6 spools a summer useing various lengths depending upon water visiblity . This leader material protects against sharp zebra mussels also. I was a fishing guide on the upper Mississippi River for 35 years and I use this on every type of lure and it does not seem to make the fish wary. I met a pro fisherman who lost his favorite top water bait to a big pike because he was not useing a leader. I showed him this product and told him if he used this on the river he would never lose a lure or have to take time to tie on another. I use the simple fg knot to tie this leader to braid and have never had it fail.

I have used the 40lb and 26lb Surflon Micro Surpreme ("SMS") fishing for Tiger Fish in the Zambezi. Tiger have extremely sharp interlocking teeth, and a strong river fish of 10 - 15lb is common. When using cut bait or live bait with circle hooks, the SMS is ideal. Firstly it is easily knotable, and with a bit of practise you can snell the circle hooks to the trace without any kinking or "pigs tails". This results in excellent bait presentation, and reliable hook up ratios. Secondly, when under tension a wire trace can "spring" a circle hook out a fish's gullet before it sets in the corner of the mouth. SMS is so limp this can never happen. Thirdly, when using wire the bait often slides up the trace onto the swivel when fighting a fish, resulting in another member of the school biting you off through the braid or mono. This will never happen with woven trace like SMS. Why not 5 stars? The only complaint is durability - after a good fish the nylon coating around the woven 49 strand steel gets worn and frayed, effecting bait presentation and hence needing replacement. But given SMS'a reasonable price, I tie a few extra traces and replace often. Alternatives - the new woven titanium Surfstrand is also knotable, although I found it too springy to snell. It is also fantastic trace, limp, unbelievably thin for its strength, and flexible. Also very durable, but very costly (the standard pack has only 10 feet of trace). All in all SMS is a wonderful product I will be using on my next trip. The 100m spool is much much better value for money.
