My husband and I walked 150 miles in the spring from Portugal to Spain on the Camino in these raincoats and loved them! There are a few details that make them ESSENTIAL. One is the adjustable head cord and the brim for the head. This made the head covering a perfect fit and kept the rain out of our faces, (except when there was wind!) The second thoughtful addition was the snap between the legs. I wondered why they had it until we got hit with rain AND wind. This nifty snap keeps the poncho over your body and not flapping behind you. When we lightened our load halfway on our trip down to essentials, these ponchos were in the MUST HAVE pile.

No photo of wearer without backpack on underneath. There is a zippered flap that helps to tuck excess material away when a backpack isn't being worn. There is no access to the backpack through the poncho. you'll have to either remove the whole poncho, have someone reach under your poncho, or shimmy your arms back through the poncho to access your bag.I'm 5'3". When zipped closed without a backpack on, the back material bottom falls below my calves, and the sleeves which appeared 3/4 length actually come over my thumbs. This length may not be suitable for shorter individuals over terrain where steep changes are necessary (think wearing a long skirt going over boulders.) Lastly, there's no ventilation in the underarms and the front zipper only exposes additional material for roominess, not opening for exposure.

I'm very impressed by the thoughtful design of this backpacking poncho. It is one-size-fits-all, and is big on me (5'7") and also big on my husband (6'), but not in a bad way. This will be easy to put on while on the trail over any amount of clothes. The sleeves seem a little short, but are loose enough that I can easily pull my arms inside and stay entirely covered, and their slightly shorter length means I'll be able to use my hands without the sleeves getting in the way.Despite being big, it has toggles and cinches to "fit" it to the wearer and hold it in place. It has capacity to cover a huge backpack, but zips down smaller for use over a smaller backpack or no pack.The hood is very large, but also cinches down to fit the wearer's head. It has a stiff bill to keep water out, but is soft enough to pack easily. Another reviewer mentioned how loud the hood is, but it's no noisier than any other unlined rain hood.The quality of the poncho is what you expect for the price.Total weight with stuff sack is 12 oz.I haven't yet tested this in rough conditions, so I plan to update and hope my rating doesn't change.UPDATE: this was pretty much a total failure on a day-long hike in heavy rain and stormy winds. Rain soaked through the poncho and completely wetted every item in the bag, right down to the bills in my wallet deep in the pack. I also fought with the poncho all day in the wind even with everything clipped and cinched down. A raincoat and rainpants were much more effective and less annoying in similar conditions the following day, but also much hotter. I would limit using this (if possible) to light rain and non-windy conditions, and for backpacking, I would probably always choose good quality rain gear over this all in one.
