They work pretty decently. Only thing is they're kind of big for lanterns calling for mantle size 21s but if you tie them a little higher than normal they seem to burn good.

These inexpensive mantels are great for what they are. Compared to a #21 Coleman mantel, they are large. The tied together end of the mantel has a long tag end left on the inside (as shown on inside out photo). The string used to tie the mantels on is more thin than a #21, and also has a small metal wire to reinforce it. After pre burning the mantels (which you should to prevent premature failures), the size shrinks considerably and no longer touches the frame. After starting the lantern and allowing the mantels to shrink to final size, these look to be approximately twice as tall as a #21 and similar diameter to a #21 (see photo comparison). As far as brightness, they seem alright. I do not have instruments to make a quanitative comparison, but qualitatively, they look to be similar in brightness. If you look at the dimmed photo, it does look like there is a hot spot in the middle-ish of these mantels. I don't think this really matters as #21s have less surface area for the gas to spread to, but probably worth noting. Overall, they seem great for their price.
