This was an enjoyable project that required patience and diligence. It lived up to my expectations in appearance as well.

A dear friend of mine gave me an Amazon gift card for my birthday, and I decided to use it to purchase something fun. Since I love both puzzles and music, this was perfect. I purchased both the cello and the grand piano, and I can't wait to get started on the piano! I had never before built a 3D puzzle, but the instructions were clear and easy to follow. By way of caution, the videos for this product are a bit deceitful. Being sped up a bit, they make snapping the pieces out look very easy. My advice: Take your time, or you may break them. Another thing that would have been nice to know at the beginning is that the puzzle came with a lot of extra pieces, both wooden parts, plastic pieces, and screws. The manufacturer knows that some parts are more fragile than others, so they provide plenty of spare parts, just in case you do happen to break one. Also, the extra screws can come in handy because they are so small that it's fairly easy to lose them. When I at first discovered that I had extra parts, I panicked, thinking I had done something wrong. In fact, I think I do have an extra piece in my creation, but it works, so it's all good. (Hint: Each piece is numbered, but the extra pieces have an apostrophe ['] next to the number.) Also, be generous with the wax because you definitely want the moving parts to travel smoothly. If your music box doesn't play perfectly at first (lots of starts and stops), don't fret. Mine seemed to have been put together too tightly at first, but the more I played it, the smoother the operation. After a couple days, it played as beautifully as the ones in the videos, I think perhaps the wax had time to cure. Mine does tend to stick once in a while because I accidentally broke a tooth on one of the gears. Had I known then that there were extras, I would have swapped it out. As it is, when it stops before it has unwound, I simply give a little nudge to the gear in the back that is partially sticking out of the book, and the mechanism continues to play.Though I tried to keep track of how much time I spent on assembly, I can only estimate it at about 5 hours. I did not do it all in one sitting, and some days I worked past the end of my timer. I also spent a fair amount of time searching for small pieces that had dropped to the carpeted floor--before I knew there were spares. I tried to subtract search time from build time to come up with the 5-hour estimate. The listing says this is suitable for older children. I suppose it is, if their fine motor skills are developed, but I would recommend it for teens and above. And one more thing, I don't remember seeing the name of the song anywhere, but we searched for it and discovered that the cello music box plays "Nocturne," Opus 9, No. 2 by Frederic Chopin.
